The Truth About Instant Noodle

Online articles about this cheap common cuisine always talk about the bad side effects of consuming it. Let me tell you something different this time.

Instant/cup noodle/ramen/ramyeon or whatever you call it is so cheap that everyone would have at least eaten it once. Personally, I classify myself as a recurring consumer of this delicacy. With the frequency of consumption, comes different - oftentimes sweet - memories.

Instant noodle reminds me of family. For the first few years of my life, I always identify instant noodles with a visit to my grandmother. I don't know how it started, but a bowl of piping hot Indomie Soto would always be prepared for me. As I was growing up, my family occasionally enjoy eating this treat together on rainy days. It provides a reason for all of us to sit together and talk about anything under the sun. Even now, we still do that from time to time.

Instant noodle reminds me of friends. It reminds me of late night study sessions that ended up with growling stomachs. Going to the pantry together to give life to the little packets of goodness which lead to chats about life. It reminds me of the batch's little rendezvous in the hostel's staircase. Sitting on the steps together, with little bowls of instant noodles in our hands because of the lack of common space for all of us. It reminds me of the last night in Bali, thinking about our next meetings when everybody would already be on their own ways.

These are all fond memories of togetherness. Just a humble packet of instant noodle can pull many people together to spill their stories. I would love love love to be given those chances again, to meet with the people I miss the most: my late grandmother, the cute one in our crowd of 3, my dearest Cabulous comrades.

This is my story. How about yours?

P.S. This post is inspired by one short scene in the first episode of 딴따라.
