Daydream

Hi! This is the promised full review of Day6' newest mini album 'Daydream' :)

Warning : I am by no means a professional reviewer nor am I a music expert. But I will try to give a thorough objective review.

Just like the previous mini album, 'Daydream' also contains 6 songs. Despite the same numbers, I feel that the overall vibe from the 2nd mini album is somewhat happier (though the lyrics are a bit sadder) and shows more varying types of music, probably reflecting the music taste of each member better because they were totally involved in the production. Plus, one thing that I notice is that they pretty much use their voices as instruments (aside for singing of course) which is pretty awesome. And I love it ❤

Anyways, let's break down the mini album to the songs :)

1. First Time

'First Time' is the so-called intro of the album.  The lyrics tell a story about a guy who realizes that the relationship is somehow not working out and thus saying goodbye for the first time. The lyrics are quite self-explanatory, so yeah.

The tune itself somewhat feels somewhat The Script-ish. I can't really pinpoint which The Script's song but it just feels like that. I'll update you when I find it. Anyways, the song is really pleasant and is good to slowly build up enthusiasm with the anthem-like tune. I personally like to listen this song in the morning when I just wake up :)

2. Blood

'Blood' sounds pretty scary as a title. According to the V app broadcast (from what I remember), they said that this song is about a couple who had fights just because of simple stuffs. And that's why the guy wants the girl to 'see blood' (not to be taken literally). At least, that's how I understand.

The chorus of this song gives me Maroon 5 vibe probably because of Bryan's falsetto (?) which actually fits the tune very well. The transition of the tunes is very smooth and the rap doesn't feel forced at all. So that's a good point of this song :) Not really the style of song that I like, but I'm pretty sure a lot of people dig this type of songs :)

3. 놓아 놓아 놓아 (Letting Go)*

So,we finally reach the title song *fist pump*. I must say that I love love love this song, mainly because I usually prefer ballad-ish songs. This song in particular is a very dynamic rock ballad. I super duper love the harmonization at the start because it simply brings out all the feels. I also like how the first chorus sung by Sungjin is accompanied with minimal accompaniment because it allows us to delve deeper into the feels first. I feel that Wonpil's voice is particularly suitable to sing the '놓아 놓아 놓아' part because his voice has this uniqueness that shows the daunting feeling of letting go a loved one.

Lyrics wise this song is definitely sadder than 'Congratulations'. While the previous title song has a sarcastic tone to it, this song is just simply sad and devastating. They even said "when I'm gone, you will be happy" which is just simply demeaning to themselves.

Overall, this song is currently on repeat on my playlists. Not just because it's the title song, I simply like this kind of songs relatively better than the others :)

4. Sing Me

I think I can safely say that this song is my second favorite song in the album (the other songs are too good to be given lower ranks so I can't really rank them >.<). Honestly, I have a very limited music repertoire as compared to my friends. But this song feels really familiar, is it The Cab-ish? I'm not really sure. One thing for sure is that it is so easy to fall in love with this song. For me, Wonpil's unique voice is particularly important in setting the mood of the song. His voice simply uplift the mood, I don't even know why.

Lyrics wise, this songs is about telling someone to remember them forever. And naturally, one of the happier songs in the album :) This song is simply a mood booster and somewhat and easy-listen ✓

5. 바래 (Hope)

The tune once again gives a familiar vibe, quite like classic 90's early 2000 band songs I guess. The bridge of the sing gives us a glimpse of guitar solo (?), really feels like the formula used by the older bands.

The happy melody accompanies the self-motivational lyrics, to love yourself like no other can. This is surely a good pick-me-up song, when nothing seems to go the right way and you simply feels useless. Loving this song all the same even when I am happy though :)

6. Hunt

This song is about a guy who is 'hunting' someone to be his girlfriend. The music itself gives a flirty retro feel, very suitable to tell this kind of story in the song :) The many repetition of the simple chorus makes this song very catchy and makes you want to sing along. The rap part is beautifully woven into the song, actually enhancing the message of the song. A plus point from that too!

Again, this song is not the usual type of songs that I like. But, I can't deny that this is a very well made song ✓

Overall, the songs presented in the album are all good. And I guess this album can be enjoyed by many because it presents many different types of songs. It's hard not to fall in love with this album because all the songs are simple well-made. Even the songs that I don't typically like are still so easy to listen! I'll give this album 4 out 5 just because some songs are not really my cup of tea :)

Next, I'd like to talk about the album concept. This whole album is just so purposeful. The album name 'Daydream' pretty much says that this album tells about yearning, hope and sometimes unfulfilled aspirations. Those are exactly what each songs are trying to convey in different themes be it love or personal ambitions.

Continuing, the album art is also very fitting. The shape of the hand reaching out further emphasizes the want and yearning for something. The photo framed inside also expresses the uncertainty and, I guess, sadness too.

Overall, this mini album is well-made and everything is well-thought. So, please do support Day6 by buying the official album so that they can continue producing awesome stuffs like this :) And finally, don't forget to subscribe to their V-app channel if you haven't done so.

Have a good day ahead :D
