I'm rather disappointed at the current reigning government. Just when President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is going to step down, his party, the Democrat Party shows their ugly side. Well, he did too. It is really a smart move on his part. But that doesn't necessarily mean that it's good for the whole country. I believe he and his party did all these now, and not few months ago, because they are stepping down soon and we can't do anything about it.
Democracy, as what Abraham Lincoln said, is supposed to be government of the people, by the people and for the people. However, all the new rules and regulations just scream monopoly of power by the higher-ups in the government. The commonalties don't have any chance to have a say in decisions made. It seems that all of them are in the government not to help the people to voice out their opinions, it is all for their own advantage. This is what breeds the wicked rats in the government, stealing away taxpayers money while having their good life. If they think we don't care, they're completely wrong. Youth in Indonesia has become more politically literate as we achieve higher levels of education. Indonesian nowadays are not as gullible as those in the past. We have voices to be heard and the government should hear and appreciate it because they work for us.
One, our beloved President, made a new act which says that presidents and vice-president who have led the country for more than one term and are resigned in a respected would receive a house each to support their activities. Wouldn't all the money that they earn during their reigning period enough to buy themselves houses? Why do they still want to use the people's money for their own use? Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, as a president, should know well enough that our country needs all the money that we have for development in many aspects. Yet, he selfishly use those money to buy houses for them to have the time of their lives. This, in itself, has reflected the nature of the government. It is NOT for the people, it is for the government itself.

A picture I found on Instagram. This, I believe, is an apt illustration of our situation. |
Second, the Democrat Party, which dominates the House of Representatives (DPR) seats made the passing of "RUU Pilkada" possible. Them 'walking out' of the plenary session was a very irresponsible act and that what actually made all hell broke loose. This officially revert our election method back to the one that we used during the New Order regime. We, the people, cannot choose directly our regional leader (ie. Governor) who supposedly will speak to the government on our behalf. But no, the Democrat has now stolen our right to vote. If this is the case, how can the government be by the people? The elected leaders will most probably only act for the benefit of themselves. More rats will infiltrate the government system. This 'new' system, I think, is really fragile. They can just bribe the regional legislative councils (DPRD), and there they are, lepak-ing in the government office and steal our money bit by bit. If this condition goes on, how can our country fly to greater height?
This is something that our nation can mourn for. Our rights has been taken away by our wicked and selfish 'representatives'. Is this really the slow but sure death of our country's democracy? I certainly hope not. I believe, our country still has hope. The government will change soon and I hope that they will bring a breath of fresh air to our country's politic stage. I genuinely hope that Jokowi-JK government will turn this madness and fix the condition. For now, this is all I wish for our country, to have our democracy back to its proper state.
Everything that I say in this post is purely written because of disappointment and sadness that my country has taken a step back rather than a step forward in embracing democracy. I don't intend to offend anyone and if they are offended then it means that they have done the wretched things that I've written.
