Bully Bully Bully !

Bully, a word that will immediately ring a bell in our head when it is said. But, what does the word 'bully' literally mean? My dictionary defines it as:

A study published on the 8th February in the journal American Sociological Review suggests that bullying is a tactic for gaining social position.
Bullies do not want to be the most or the least popular guys at school, they want to be in the middle of social hierarchy. In spite of that, there must be another reason of bullying. Bullying is brought by negative matters in the bullies’ life. Zach Veach, a sixteen-year-old American auto-racing driver, was a bullying victim. He stated that bullies are usually people who are insecure about themselves. There must be something wrong with the bullies’ family life, love life, or may be their past.

As we all know, a lot of people despise bullies for their attitude and harmful action. The form of their action is not only physical ‘torture’; they also torture their victims verbally. Bullies push around people by shoving them to lockers, mocking their victims as they like, and may be molesting them in some way. But, the most overwhelming form of bullying is done through ridicule, insult, and rumors, rather than physical abuse. Nevertheless, all of those actions, in the end, will affect the victims' mental as well. It can lead to depression, anxiety, and even suicidal ideation. Creepy, isn’t it?

One of the most evident examples is Jamey Rodemeyer’s case. He committed suicide since he could not stand being mocked all the time. He was bullied online with gay slurs for more than a year. The bullying had begun during middle school, according to his parents. He had told family and friends that he had endured hateful comments in school and online, mostly related to his sexual orientation.

Bullying also bothered a number of celebrities during their school days. I think, the worst case is Demi Lovato’s. She had had an ‘unhealthy relationship with food’ and self-mutilated her wrists due to her experience of being bullied. Fortunately, she finally recovers after going to the rehab center.
Rebecca Black, a viral star, was also bullied. Her schoolmates mocked her by singing her debut song, Friday, in a nasal voice or asked “hey, Rebecca, guess what day it is?”
In the end, both Demi Lovato and Rebecca Black decided to drop out from school and start home-schooling.
Despite all that bitter facts, we should not allow bullying let us down. Taylor Lautner, Rebecca Black, and Demi Lovato and many other celebrities did not give up. They stood up for their dream and move on. We would not stop driving just because an insect ran into the front window, would we?
There are some things we can do to reduce the bullying effect on us :
  1. Try to remember that when someone is picking on you for no reasons; just tell yourself that you are not the one with the problem.
  2. Surround yourself with good friends and keep moving forward.
  3.  Don’t let bullying block your way to your dream, keep doing what you are doing.
Here is a pretty nice anti-bullying song* :)

*Well, at least I think it is :p
