Loyalty

This is not something I should write about just a day before the new term starts. But, seeing that this is actually a value that I put as number 1 importance in any relationships that I am in (be it between friends, family, and even to bands that I like), I would like to talk more about this. I also want to talk about recent saddening cases that struck EXO, the boyband that introduced me to the K-pop world.
The Wikipedia defines loyalty as faithfulness or devotion to a person, country, group, or cause. This definition exactly describes how I see loyalty is supposed to be. When I say that I want to be loyal to something or someone then I will stay through the thick and thin. A loyalty should not appear just because there is a good opportunity offered or suddenly disappear just because a problem arises. However, it does not necessarily mean that I will say everything those particular parties do and say are true. This picture I found on the net pretty much sums up my view about loyalty.

Friendship requires loyalty. I never get those people who befriend each other because of benefits that the 'friendship' can give to them. Personally, friendship is something of much importance to me. It is never easy for me to be very close to someone. I need months, or even years, to feel very comfortable around some people and to confide my problems to them. This fact actually explains why I can roam around malls without anyone accompanying me. It IS lonely but I'm quite used to it. Anyway, back to topic, I feel very strongly about my friends. I want to support them in whatever state they are in (in love, heartache, happy, sad, and whatever you can mention) and help them whenever I can lend a helping hand. On the other hand, I don't want to be a burden and tie them down just because they have to be with me. I can let go of them at appropriate times as long as they are happy. I will provide a shoulder to cry on should there be anything to be sad about. This, I think, is a way for me to show them my loyalty and I would appreciate it if they can offer the same thing. I am completely aware that people have different views about loyalty and I do not demand my friends to be like that because I, myself, am not a perfect friend either.

As a fangirl, when I declare myself being a member of a fandom I also promise myself to stay with them through all their successful events or jobs and also through the periods when they undergo various stress and problems. Well, I'm talking about EXO in this case. It is true that I also like quite a few other groups, but EXO is still my favourite. I always look forward to their comebacks, watch talk-shows and reality shows that they are on and even pray for them. I cried along when they got their first win for Wolf. My heart felt like it has been squeezed so hard when I heard saddening news or rumours about them. They are that special to me.

This few months has been very challenging for EXO. First, they had Kris filed his lawsuit to terminate his contract just a week before their first solo concert starts. Then, they had Baekyeon/Byuntae relationship revealed. These problems are actually very relevant to the topic 'loyalty'.

At first, I was confused about Kris' sudden departure since he was still in the music video and actually joined the whole group practicing for their concert. Then, I pitied him because of the speculations that he actually has a heart problem. With the assumption that he was not fit to continue all the band activities, I could spare him some understanding. I thought that he does not want to further burden the rest of the members because of his disease. But when I discovered the fact that he actually left to film some movie (you know, there is no way a person with heart disease can survive the tight schedule of filming), I became very disappointed. More than half of my respect for him was gone. He left the rest of EXO members, the 11 of them to practice until they drop because they have to change all of their choreography to adapt with his departure. Isn't it very insensitive to do such a thing? I think that he should have filed his lawsuit even before the Overdose era started, that would lessen the damage caused. Not only that Kris did not stuck through the hard times with other members, but he also never consider the other members well-being and feelings. If anyone said that he did that because he received very little attention when promoted with EXO, I would say that it is not true at all. Many EXOtics, including me, will watch anything that any EXO members star in, be it a very small role or major role. But then, even after this long rant, I will still try to support all of them, be it those members who are still holding on to their dreams together or Kris himself.

Then, not long after that, Dispatch released their exclusive report about the then alleged relationship between Baekhyun and Taeyeon. When SM finally confirmed that the rumour was true, all hell broke loose. Many people started posting hate mails or comments on their SNS accounts, especially on Instagram where the couple was hinting their relationship. Many people whose bias was Baekhyun or Taeyeon started leaving the fandom. Does this what you call as being a part of a fandom? Maybe people would say that I can say this because Baekhyun is not my bias. Well, it's true that Baekhyun is not my favourite EXO member of all. I believe that I would cry too should Kai be the one involved in the scandals, but I would snap out of it and be happy for him too. Isn't that what fans are for? To rejoice together in happiness and cry together in sorrow with the artists. Loyalty should not vanish once what we want is gone. It should still go on until the very end, maybe until all the members are all so old that they have to disband.

So, yeah... That's all I have to say about loyalty for now. I really can't offer flowery words to think about all this stuffs but I hope whoever reads this piece of writing can see how I perceive loyalty (not that anyone cares about my opinion, though).

Btw, here's a song to enjoy about loyalty. Well, the title doesn't say 'loyalty' but the underlying meaning of the whole song is about it. Enjoy~
